Developing an online spatial bibliography featuring an Alaska deepwater marine science case study

Publisher:NOAA
Publish date:2023
Publish format:PDF

This technical memorandum details the process and outcomes of constructing an interactive spatial bibliography and related products, which can help inform baselines for potential ocean exploration work by assessing the biological, chemical, and physical marine science knowledge gaps. By placing literature in a geospatial context and incorporating tools to search, sort, and filter for pertinent information, the interactive spatial bibliography can help researchers understand the state of science in an area. The case study presented here represents a partnership between NOAA Ocean Exploration (part of NOAA Research), NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS, part of NOAA’s National Ocean Service), and the NOAA Central Library to support the planning of NOAA Ocean Exploration activities in deep waters (200 meters and deeper) of the Alaska region. This workflow can be applied to other regions and projects to assist in analyzing potential science gaps, project planning, and decision making.
